Not So Wilderness Childe

Admittedly, there isn't so much wilderness in the Wilderness Childe lately. It's dang cold and windy out there! I know some of you badass Groks and Grokettes are out there in the blizzards, tearing it up, but not me. I'm a weather wuss most of the time. I'm that Grokette sitting in the nice cozy cave by the fire, making pretty cave paintings. Unfortunately, being holed up in my man-made cave leaves the blog lacking for fun wilderness content.

Not only does my own entertainment suffer, so does my diet and exercise. While I'm not sitting on the sofa for 8 hours a day (usually) and eating brownies, I know I'm not eating quite as lean or getting quite as much movement as I would on warmer days. I've been making do the best I can, but I'm definitely itching to get outside and am definitely yearning for longer days. This whole getting dark at 5pm thing is getting old already.

The holidays do help combat the dullness of winter and Christmas just wrapped up. I had a wonderful time with my family, ate well and didn't "cheat." My family did more than they needed to and I got some lovely gifts, including the Droid X I've been drooling over (so hopefully we'll have some better photos around here!) and a Barnes & Noble Nook. The Nook is quite a neat little gizmo, I have to say. I just downloaded my first book on it and am in love. I do like reading actual books, but the Nook is so small and light. It'll be great to take to work and not have to worry about messing up my pages.

Ok, so I need your help with the Nook. I need book suggestions! What are you reading?

I also got Ball's Complete Book of Home Preserving, and Country Wisdom & Know-How: Everything You Need to Know to Live Off the Land. Both books will come in very handy for becoming more self sufficient and sustainable, and hopefully will make for some great blog content also!

I'm curious. What keeps you going through the winter? What do you do to keep it fresh and interesting?

I just got a nook too, and although it will never replace regular books, it's a nifty gadget! I have Alice In Wonderland, The Elegant Universe (a book on string theory), and World War Z (a zombie apocalypse book), and of course a free periodic table and weights and measures chart, just for fun:)

Fresh & interesting? We plan our garden, ordering seeds as needed (our favorite place: Nichols Garden Nursery in Albany, OR); attend plays, symphony & opera; get together with friends & neighbors over potluck meals (often featuring home-preserved foods & homemade soup), and work on projects around the house. Hubby is a musician (pianist) and arranger, so there's always lots of music, and I knit when I have time. Lots of stuff to do when it rains! Good thing, 'cause where I live, we get between 125 and 150 inches of rain each year!

For me, January and February are my wind down and catch up months. I do a lot of reading, watching films, finishing knitting projects, garden planning and poultry purchasing. I skip the gym until March, which not only saves me about $120 a year but it also means I'm not trying to workout in a gym overcrowded by people trying to make a go at their new years resolutions. (resulting in less stress and frustration for me.)
I start seeds indoors in February and I usually get my first batch of meat chickens mid-end February. I also start putting together any raised beds that need replaced, and this year I'm building a new chicken coop so I'll start that in my garage. I also have to build a new chicken tractor, so that will get done while it's still cold out.
Now that I'm done with my seasonal job, I plan on volunteering at the animal shelter until it gets warm and I have more work to do at home.

@DawnRose- Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite books. I've heard a lot oabout World War Z but never delved into it.

@Mary- Garden planning is a great idea! I should probably do that soon huh? I'm learning to knit & crochet so maybe that'll use up some spare time. :)

@Allie- Sounds like you keep very busy! I agree with avoiding the gym. It's insanity! Great idea with volunteering at the shelter. Volunteering is always a good way to make productive use of spare time.
